Savouring Spring

Spring... so close you can almost taste it...

At least that seems to be the opinion of our deer.

This photo just makes me smile.

They were gathered on the lawn in front of Sunflower cottage this evening, when we came home from the Lion's Club Fund Raising Dinner for the Cancer Society -- which by the way, is where you should have been. What a great meal, what great people, what a great time.

The deer are little annoyed that their stretch of lawn seems to have vanished back under the snow, but they have made it through the hard times of the winter.   There is forage for them, they can root down through the little snow that is left and find something to nibble. Buds are swelling on the trees, little powerful packets of protein.  Water is open and running and easy to find if you need a drink.

Oh... and if all else fails, you can raid the bird feeders.  The jays are notorious at sharing the seeds by flinging it about.

  1. They are beauties.

I remember watching them come up to the flowerboxes below the bird feeders in the winter. The birds dropped off enough seed from the feeders that they'd get some from inside the empty boxes. Just a bit of variety in the diet for the winter.
