The mallards look splendid in their autumn plumage. These handsome lads were enjoying a sail on the bay in the early mist.
They were joined by a small flock of buffleducks -- also known as Hooded Mergansers.
We only get to see these beauties in spring and fall as they pass through on their migration. Which is a shame in some ways, as they are stunningly lovely little birds. Divers, they are rarely on top of the water.
My camera gave up the unequal struggle of trying to zoom in on them through the mist.
But this photo is one of the best we've seen, taken by Ray Hennessy. It captures these gorgeous little chaps -- the gents in their formal wear, and little Mrs. in more muted shades.

I guess Mergansers avoid urban areas.
