Last Cookout of the Summer

It's hard to believe that Tuesday was our last day gathered on the beach with our guests this summer. There was only one week when we had to move the World Famous Wiener Roast indoors -- the first one of the season. All the rest enjoyed being at the water's edge, with great weather.

For the grand finale, Dave and Mike carefully constructed the bonfire to end all bonfires. Druids could have danced about this blaze for pagan rites of Beltane. They tied it together with binder twine during construction -- a plan that didn't survive long when the fire took hold, but it was something to see.

The potato canon appeared. It's been fine tuned each week -- now there is impressive height and a powerful trajectory. Potatoes can be lobbed right over past the creek entrance. And as for height -- well, seagulls in flight tremble at the thought! Experimental ammunition has also been introduced. Don't even ask... it's a guy thing...

It's reminiscent of the famous Chicken Canon on Air Farce... Corn cobs really fly. Hot dogs also get good distance, and hold together far better than expected. Security for the upcoming G8 2010 in Huntsville can relax, however. Despite best efforts, there's no way that potato is going to clear the mountain into Dwight bay...
