A Silence of Wings
Our barn swallows left today. That's about two weeks later than the rest of the swallows heading out on their fall migration.
Mom swallow did very well -- she got four babies flying from her first nesting in July, and three out of four flying from this very late second nest. That's impressive.
The barn is strangely silent, without their summer voices. The aisle is strangely empty without the parents circling endlessly through bringing food to the nest.
We wish them well... it's a long way to fly, for little wings, and they are late... so everybody cross your fingers, and say a tiny little prayer for these little birds heading out alone to South America.
Really really truly, we hope we'll see them back here again next summer. Just nesting a little bit sooner!
