The cook-out is always fun, for all ages. Not just the food -- which Carol ensures is excellent; or the s'mores -- which Sue engineers with panache. It's so much more.
There's the visits with the ducklings, the chance to make new friends and dig out a little sandcastle while grown-ups chat, there's a fashion parade (great shorts, Dave!!) and always something new (cool Musklip, Megan!)
It never fails, everybody wants to get in on the Seed Sitting contest. We used to use watermelon seeds, but when genetic engineering bred them out of the watermelons, we had to shift tactics. After all, this has been a Bondi tradition for pretty much forever. One of our seed spitting certificates was even entered into evidence in a court trial, proving the defendant was "on the beach" and not 'in the city' at that time and date. We tried some alternate seeds, but finally settled on popcorn kernels. Clean, easy to acquire, and no worries about seed allergies. Plus they are easy to see, and the ducks enjoy coming in after and cleaning up the course.
Little Elizabeth is still working out the logistics of this sport. Del gave it his all on his birthday before heading back to the cottage for the party.
David, who has more experience at this than anyone perhaps should admit to, showed the way again, at 39'4". But then, with shorts like that, he's hard to beat in anything!
Jack began by writing down the names and distances for Nancy, but that task sooned paled beside the opportunity to get into the game. He gave his family a run for the title, and scooped up the honours of First Place in the Intermediate Boys division.
Just as we were packing up the last of the leftovers, a rain shower came spattering across the lake. It didn't amount to much -- standing under a tree, I remained quite dry. But it did produce a lovely rainbow as the sun came back out!
