Cedars Cottage Snuggled under Snow

Cedars has a metal roof, and is structurally designed to handle this load and will shed this snow on its own so we have no concern over the amount of snow on the roof.

What is interesting is that you can see the difference in the amount of snow on the lake side -- which is windward -- and on the back of the cottage -- which is leeward.

Snow sweeps in with the wind off the lake, drifts up over the ridgepole of the cottage, and settles on the sheltered side.  There's an enormous difference in the amount of weight on each side of the cottage.   That, in  a less well built structure, is one of the factors that contributes to collapse, since the distribution is uneven.

For us, for Cedars, it just looks cool...

  2. It was the same with my parent's house... metal roof, one side tended to get more accumulation than the other, but the place was built sturdy enough to stand up nicely to the winter.
