Good Deeds and Gratitude

Dad had a saying, "no good deed goes unpunished."  We like to think he was joking.

But when I rescued this bluejay today from the back porch... well...

He wasn't a happy jay, to start with. Having ventured into the porch after a few morsels of corn that had fallen from the deer feed bag onto the floor, he then panicked, throwing himself into the windows.  We can't have that. He'll just hurt himself.

But when I scooped him up to rescue him, he pointed out that although tiny, he is fierce, and willing to take on all comers.  Yes, he bit me. As hard as he could. (which I must point out, given the size difference, isn't all that hard. I shall survive with barely a flesh wound...)

He did however give us a loud cry as he flew away.  And while he might not have been delighted to find himself being firmly grasped by some 'upright', we're sure he was happy to be flying free again.

  1. I've seen woodpeckers hit the windows and need a bit of time to recover from it. Not a jay, though. Good shot of the grumpy fellow!
