There was a tremendous tragedy in the chicken coop last week. A raccoon clawed and scratched his way into the coop at night, and committed murder most fowl. Coons will simply keep killing if they get the chance. This one slaughtered seven hens, and mauled two more (both of whom are still in the ICU, one doing quite well, but one not looking too hopeful.)
The BMD, looking grim, replaced the damaged door with something guaranteed coon-proof. They set live traps. They removed the inhabitants of said live traps...
A friend brought us reinforcements in the form of new hens. At this time of year, we rely on a good supply of eggs for our guests at Bondi Village.
New chickens don't always get along at first. They must establish the Pecking Order... and these two were determined not to back down. Luckily there was a fence between them, so they were able to work out their differences. Taffy went in to try and make peace... It was a good effort, but not as lasting a treaty as she had hoped. But by the next day, it was all sorted out, and the hens are happily ranging together.
Hopefully with no more visits from the maurading raccoons...
