Friends of mine were startled yesterday to find a wingless bird at their bird-feeder, right outside the window.
This little pine marten made the most of the opportunity to stuff himself with seeds and suet.
Winter is a time when most of us do have food out for the birds. We're usually hoping to catch a glimpse of the bluejays, chickadees, nuthatches, woodpeckers and grosbeaks who winter here.
But sometimes, what shows up doesn't look much like a bird. Nancy has one very determined deer, with a long neck, who has figured out that if she stands on the snow, with her front feet on the deck, and reaaaallllyyyy reaches, she can bump the birdfeeder, and be rewarded with a mouthful of sunflower seeds.
Pavlov would be proud...
