Wings for Silence, Wings for Gliding
Barred owls keep cropping up in our Resort posts. That's because we have quite a lot of them in the woods, calling to us in the evening with their famous "Who Cooks for You?" hoot.
When Quinn was here last week, he found a barred owl feather along one of our hiking trails.
Now barred owls have the most amazing feathers. Not only are they fringed along the edges, to allow them be absolutely silent fliers, each feather is carefully sculpted to contribute to the cause.
Note how beautifully curved this feather is, with it's sharp, narrow leading edge, and it's aerodynamic shape to provide maximum lift for the bird -- who is planning on gliding down almost like a parachutist, onto the unsuspecting mouse-on-the-menu.
